Bring your chat history with you

Switching to Krater doesn’t mean starting over. Import your conversations from ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini and they land in your sidebar — titles, full message history, images, and original timestamps included.

The import runs entirely on Krater’s servers, so you can close the tab and come back later. Re-uploading the same export is safe: already-imported chats are skipped, and interrupted imports resume where they stopped.

How to import

  1. Export your data from the provider (instructions below).
  2. In Krater, open Settings (profile menu, or Cmd+, / Ctrl+,) and go to the Data & Privacy tab.
  3. Under Import conversations, pick your provider — ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini.
  4. Drop the export file onto the drop zone, or click Choose file.
  5. Watch the live progress bar. When it finishes, your chats appear in the sidebar.

Step 1 — get your export

Provider Where to export File you get
ChatGPT ChatGPT → Settings → Data controls → Export data .zip sent by email
Claude Claude → Settings → Privacy → Export data .zip from Anthropic’s email link
Gemini takeout.google.com → deselect all → My Activity → Gemini Apps → set format to JSON .zip (or MyActivity.json / MyActivity.html alone)

Exports are generated by the provider, not instantly — ChatGPT and Claude email you a download link, Takeout can take minutes to hours for large accounts. You don’t need to unzip anything; upload the archive as-is.

Step 2 — upload

The file uploads straight from your browser to private Krater storage — it never passes through a third party. Accepted files:

Maximum export size: 2 GB.

Step 3 — let it run

Progress shows live (Importing X of Y conversations…). You can safely close Settings, refresh the page, or sign out and back in — Krater reconnects to the running job automatically. A background watchdog resumes any import that stalls, so large exports keep moving even if a worker restarts.

What gets imported

Item Imported?
Conversation titles Yes — original titles preserved
Message history (your messages + AI replies) Yes — full text, in order
Images in chats (uploads, DALL·E generations, Claude file images) Yes — restored into your chats
Original timestamps Yes — chats sort into your history by their real dates
Source label Yes — each chat is tagged with the provider it came from
Non-image file attachments No — file contents other than images don’t transfer
Provider-side memory, custom instructions, GPTs/Gems/Projects No — these are platform features, not part of your chats

Imported conversations are read like normal Krater chats. You can search them, organize them into Projects, share them, or keep chatting in them — replies continue on Krater’s 500+ AI models.

Re-imports, retries, and canceling

If something fails

The summary at the end shows exactly what happened: imported, skipped, failed, and images restored counts. A whole-job failure tells you why:

Message Meaning
“The export could not be read correctly” The file parsed but hit a format error — retry once, then re-download the export
“The export did not contain a supported conversation format” Wrong file — check you picked the right provider and the right export type
“The import stopped responding” / “took too long” Transient worker issue — click Retry; it resumes where it left off
“Some messages could not be saved” A few conversations failed individually — the rest imported fine

A single corrupt conversation never sinks the job — it’s counted as failed and the import moves on.
