Every major chatbot has a free tier and most paid plans cluster at $20. What actually differs: measured speed (10x spread), privacy defaults, and what the two blind rounds we ran showed.
The best AI chatbot in 2026 depends on what you can measure, not on vibes. On price, every major chatbot has a free tier and most paid consumer plans cluster around $20 a month (Grok charges $30 for SuperGrok, Gemini is $19.99). On speed, our daily measured run puts Gemini's flagship fastest at 67 tokens per second and Grok's at 85, with DeepSeek V3.2 slowest at 8. On privacy, Claude and Krater are the only ones that do not train on consumer chats by default. On quality, the two blind rounds we have run put GPT-6 Astra first on text tasks and Nano Banana first on image tasks, each a single round rather than a verdict.

Most "best AI chatbot" lists rank by feel. We are not allowed to do that: we only rank what we measured. So this table compares what the public can verify: price, free tier, the model behind the paid plan, whether your chats train it, and how fast the flagship model actually is in our daily run on the model pricing and speed tracker.
| Chatbot | Free tier | Paid consumer plan | Flagship model | Trains on your chats by default | Measured tokens/sec | Krater credits per 1K output |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Yes | Plus $20/mo | GPT-5.5 | Yes (opt out in Data Controls) | 43.5 | 6 |
| Claude | Yes | Pro $20/mo | Claude Sonnet 5.5 (Opus 5.5 on Max) | No (opt-in only) | 39.5 (Sonnet 5.5), 35.8 (Opus 5.5) | 2 (Sonnet), 4 (Opus) |
| Gemini | Yes | AI Pro $19.99/mo | Gemini 3.1 Pro | Yes (Keep Activity on) | 67.5 | 2.4 |
| Perplexity | Yes | Pro $20/mo | Sonar Pro | Yes (AI Data Usage toggle) | not measured | not measured |
| Grok | Yes | SuperGrok $30/mo | Grok 4.7 | Not clearly published | 84.6 | 1.2 |
| Copilot | Yes | Pro $20/mo | OpenAI models (GPT-5.5) | Yes for signed-in personal accounts | 43.5 (same engine) | 6 |
| DeepSeek | Yes | No paid consumer tier published | DeepSeek V3.2 | Yes per its privacy policy | 8.0 | 0.08 |
| Krater | No free tier; paid plans from $20/mo, cancel anytime | Pro $20/mo, Ultra $49/mo | All of the above, 500+ models | Never | model-dependent | 0.08 to 10 |
Tokens per second and TTFT are 7-day medians from our daily same-prompt run, except GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6 Sol, GPT-5.3 Codex, Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Sonnet 5.5, Grok 4.7 and DeepSeek V3.2, which were first measured today in a single run. One number to sanity-check cost: DeepSeek V3.2 costs 0.08 Krater credits per 1K output tokens, about 125x cheaper than GPT-6 Astra at 10.
We have run two blind rounds, each on a single task, which is the honest limit of what we can claim.
In Claude vs ChatGPT (September 2026), four current models wrote a slugify function with unit tests, ranked by a reviewer who did not know which model wrote what: GPT-6 Astra first at 7.03 Krater credits, GPT-6 Sol second at 2.44, Claude Fable 5.1 third at 19.97, Claude Sonnet 5 fourth at 9.11. Every model passed the tests; the ranking was instruction-following and style. In the same round across five tasks GPT-6 Astra came first on four.
In best AI image generator (September 2026), six identical prompts were sent to ten models: Nano Banana followed all six and rendered every line of text correctly in about 9 seconds for 10 credits; Flux 2 tied on accuracy at 4 credits and 7 seconds per image.
Two rounds are not a benchmark and they do not make a chatbot "the best". They do tell you which model produced the better output on the specific task we tested, and how much that output cost.
From published features and prices, not rankings:
Krater is the only entry on this list that is not a chatbot built around one lab's model. Pro is $20 a month for 1,500 credits usable across every flagship in the table: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, plus 500+ others including image and video models. The honest limits: no Projects or Canvas-style document editing, no native voice mode in the web app, and API access starts on Ultra at $49. Privacy is the outlier in your favor: Krater's policy states it never trains on your data on any plan, which no other consumer chatbot in this list can say by default.
On what can be measured: Gemini 3.1 Pro is the fastest flagship (67 tokens/sec), GPT-6 Astra won our text blind round, Nano Banana won our image round, and Claude is the only major that does not train on consumer chats by default. There is no single winner for every use.
All of them. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, Copilot and DeepSeek all have free tiers; Krater has no free tier; paid plans start at $20/mo and you can cancel anytime.
DeepSeek's chat is free and its output costs a fraction of a cent per thousand tokens. Among paid plans, Claude Pro, ChatGPT Plus, Copilot Pro and Krater Pro are all $20 a month; SuperGrok is $30.
No. ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity do by default on consumer plans with an opt-out. Claude is opt-in only. Krater never trains on any plan.
By measured tokens per second in our daily run: Grok 4.7 at 84.6, Gemini 3.1 Pro at 67.5, GPT-5.5 at 43.5, Claude Sonnet 5.5 at 39.5, DeepSeek V3.2 at 8.0.
For general use, voice, memory and app polish it is the most complete single product. For privacy, Claude beats it by default; for speed, Grok and Gemini beat it; for one subscription covering all of them, Krater is the answer.
Claude for the majors (opt-in training) and Krater overall (never trains, any plan). ChatGPT requires you to switch off training in Data Controls.
Subscribing to ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, Gemini AI Pro and Perplexity Pro together costs about $110 a month. Krater Pro at $20 covers all four models plus image and video generation in one account.
There is no best chatbot, only best for what you are doing and what you are willing to pay. The measurable facts: $20 buys you the flagship tier almost everywhere, speeds differ by an order of magnitude, and only Claude and Krater leave your data alone by default. If you want all of the top models without picking a lab, one Krater Pro subscription covers them.
