Vibe coding means building software by describing what you want to an AI and judging the result, instead of writing the code yourself. Where the term came from, what it is good for, and where it breaks.
Vibe coding is building software by describing what you want to an AI in plain language, running what it produces, and steering by results ("that button is broken", "make it faster") rather than by reading and writing the code yourself. The term was coined by AI researcher Andrej Karpathy in February 2025 and quickly became shorthand for prompt-driven development. It is excellent for prototypes, personal tools, websites and small games, and risky for production software that handles money or personal data unless someone reviews the code.

In February 2025 Andrej Karpathy, a co-founder of OpenAI and former head of AI at Tesla, described a new way he was writing small projects: talking to an AI coding tool, accepting its changes without reading the diffs closely, pasting error messages back in, and "fully giving in to the vibes". He called it vibe coding. The phrase spread because it named something many people were already doing, and by the end of the year it was common enough that Collins Dictionary picked it as a word of the year.
The original meaning was deliberately loose: you do not really look at the code. In everyday use today it means any development where natural-language prompts do most of the work, from a designer making a landing page to an engineer scaffolding a feature.
A real five-step loop, building a booking page for a yoga studio:
At no point did you write CSS or JavaScript. What you did do: specify clearly, test like a user, and notice what is wrong. Those are the real skills of vibe coding.
| Traditional coding | No-code builders | Vibe coding | |
|---|---|---|---|
| You work with | Code | Drag-and-drop blocks | Plain-language prompts |
| Flexibility | Unlimited | Limited to the blocks offered | Very high, it is real code underneath |
| Speed to first version | Slow | Medium | Fast |
| Skill needed | Programming | Learning the tool | Clear writing and testing |
| Main risk | Time | Lock-in, platform limits | Bugs and security issues you did not notice |
The key difference from no-code: vibe coding produces normal code you own, so you are not capped by what a template allows.
Vibe coding's weakness is exactly its strength: you are not reading the code. That is fine when the cost of a bug is a misaligned button. It is not fine when a bug leaks customer data. Known failure patterns:
The fixes are simple habits: test after every change, keep version history so you can roll back, ask the AI to refactor periodically, and get a human review before anything handles payments or personal data. How to vibe code turns these into a workflow.
Broadly three groups: AI app builders that run and host the result (Lovable, Bolt, v0, Replit, Krater), AI code editors for people who already code (Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Code), and general chat assistants where you copy code out yourself. For non-developers the first group is the practical choice because the preview and the hosting are built in. We compare them in best vibe coding tools.
It produces real software, but the work is specification and testing rather than writing syntax. Many professional developers now vibe code parts of their work and review the result.
Andrej Karpathy coined the term in a post in February 2025. The practice itself grew with AI coding tools from 2023 onward.
Yes, that is the point. The most important beginner skill is describing what you want precisely and checking every result.
No, but it is easy to misuse. It is ideal for prototypes and personal or small business tools, and needs code review for anything security-sensitive.
It changes what developers spend time on. Building small things is now fast for everyone; designing, securing and maintaining large systems still needs engineering skill.
The fastest way to understand vibe coding is to do it once. Open Krater, type /build and describe what you want. Publishing to a live URL and connecting your own domain is included on Ultra ($49/month, 2 sites and 2 custom domains) and Max ($119/month, 5 and 5), together with 500+ AI models for everything else you do.
Vibe coding means describing software to an AI and steering by results. It has made building websites, tools and games accessible to anyone who can explain what they want, as long as you test carefully and get a review for anything that handles sensitive data.
