Honest website hosting costs: free static hosting, cheap shared plans, builder subscriptions, and the full yearly total including domain and SSL, no marketing math.
Hosting a website costs anywhere from $0 to about $600+ per year. Free static hosting (GitHub Pages, Netlify, Cloudflare Pages) costs nothing if you can use Git. Shared hosting runs $36 to $180/year. Builders that include hosting (Krater, Wix class) run roughly $190 to $590/year depending on the plan. Add about $10 to $20/year for your domain and nothing for SSL, which is free and automatic everywhere now.

| Option | Monthly | Per year | Domain | Total first year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Static hosting (GitHub Pages, Netlify, CF Pages) | $0 | $0 | ~$12 | ~$12 |
| Shared hosting (intro price) | $3 to $5 | $36 to $60 | ~$12 | ~$48 to $72 |
| Shared hosting (renewal price) | $10 to $15 | $120 to $180 | ~$12 | ~$130 to $190 |
| Site builder (Wix/Squarespace class) | $16 to $29 | $190 to $350 | often 1st year free | ~$190 to $350 |
| Krater Ultra (build + host + 2 domains) | $49 | $490 yearly billing / $588 monthly | you buy it, ~$12 | ~$500 to $600 |
| VPS (DigitalOcean/Hetzner) | $5 to $50 | $60 to $600 | ~$12 | ~$72 to $612 |
Shared hosts advertise the cheapest number they can. "$2.99/month" almost always means: prepaid for 36 months, renewing at $11.99. Before comparing, find the renewal price and multiply your real commitment. If a price is only visible after entering your email, assume it is higher than the ad.
Cheapest possible: static hosting at ~$12/year total, if you can get files onto it. Cheapest honest managed option: a renewal-priced shared plan, ~$150/year, if you are on WordPress. Cheapest if you would otherwise pay for other AI tools: a bundle like Krater Ultra, where $49/month covers the site, the domain support, and the AI suite most people pay $20 to $60/month for separately. Cheapest for a single basic brochure site where you do not mind an editor: whichever builder runs a promo that year; the incumbent tiers are interchangeable.
What never makes sense: paying separate bills for website hosting, a site builder, an AI chat subscription and an image tool, when they are all one subscription somewhere.
From $0 on static hosts, through $3 to $15 on shared plans, to $16 to $49 on builders, depending on what is bundled.
Static hosting (GitHub Pages, Netlify) is genuinely excellent but technical. Ad-supported free shared hosting is not worth it.
Intro pricing. Always check the renewal rate before buying, and do not prepay three years for a site you may redesign in one.
Yes, separately: about $10 to $20/year. Some builders bundle the first year free, but you then pay renewal at their rate.
A VPS is $5+/month but adds your own time for updates, security and backups. For businesses, the hidden cost is your time, not the server fee.
Compare the total stack, not the hosting line: Krater Ultra replaces the builder, the host, and most of the AI tools you pay for elsewhere. Open Krater, type /build and describe what you want. Publishing to a live URL and connecting your own domain is included on Ultra ($49/month, 2 sites and 2 custom domains) and Max ($119/month, 5 and 5), together with 500+ AI models for everything else you do.
Website hosting costs $0 to $600/year depending on who maintains it. Add ~$12/year for a domain, nothing for SSL. The cheapest option is the one matching your skills; the priciest is paying four subscriptions for what one bundle covers.
