Most AI builders host your site on their subdomain. Here is what custom domain support really means, which tools do it properly, and what it should cost.
An AI website builder with a custom domain means the builder hosts your site and lets you point a domain you own at it, usually with one DNS record and automatic SSL. Builders that do this properly include Krater (custom domains on Ultra at $49/month) and Wix-class hosts; several popular AI builders put domains behind extra steps or another platform's account. When comparing, check four things: who registers the domain, how many records you must add, whether SSL is automatic, and what happens to your domain if you cancel.

Every AI builder gives you a free address on their subdomain: yourname.builder.com. For a business, that looks unprofessional and you do not control it. A custom domain setup instead lets your own yourname.com serve the site. Two things must be true for that to work: the builder must accept outside hostnames on their infrastructure, and you must be able to tell the internet where your domain should point. The first is the feature; the second is one DNS record.
You build the site with /build, publish it to yourname.krater.site, then open the site's Domains tab, type your domain, and get exactly one record to add at your registrar: a CNAME pointing to krater.site. Cloudflare handles certificates behind the scenes, so https works with no setup on your side. Ultra covers 2 custom domains ($49/month), Max covers 5 ($119/month). The step-by-step version is in how to connect a custom domain.
Traditional site builders (Wix, Squarespace, Hostinger, Webflow) support custom domains on paid tiers, roughly $16 to $29/month, and are the incumbent answer. You get a mature editor but weaker AI generation and slower iteration than prompt-driven builders.
AI-first builders vary. Lovable supports custom domains on paid plans. Bolt and v0 push you to Netlify and Vercel deploys, which work but add a second account and a developer-flavored dashboard. Replit hosts with custom domains on paid tiers.
Developer hosting (Netlify, Vercel, GitHub Pages, Cloudflare Pages) is the free or cheap option if you are comfortable with Git: technically the best value, practically unusable for the audience this page is for.

Some builders resell domains, but we recommend registering directly at a registrar in your own name. It is the same price and keeps ownership cleanly with you.
No. .com is the easiest to remember, but .io, .co, .ai and country extensions all work identically for hosting.
Yourname.com is your own domain. Yourname.builder.com is theirs. A subdomain of your own domain like app.yourname.com is also yours and often the right choice for tools.
No. Your own domain is better for SEO than a builder subdomain. Just keep redirects consistent if you move an existing site.
Yes. Any domain at any registrar works; you only need access to its DNS settings to add the one record.
Build the site first, publish to your krater.site address, then attach your domain when you are happy with it. Open Krater, type /build and describe what you want. Publishing to a live URL and connecting your own domain is included on Ultra ($49/month, 2 sites and 2 custom domains) and Max ($119/month, 5 and 5), together with 500+ AI models for everything else you do.
Custom domain support means the builder hosts and you point your domain with one record. Judge builders on how many records they need, whether SSL is automatic, and whether you keep the domain if you leave. Buy the domain yourself, always.
