OpenRouter alternatives: when the API gateway is right, and when a flat plan beats it

OpenRouter is an API gateway: one key, 400+ models, pay as you go at the providers' own token prices plus a 5.5% fee when you buy credits. It is the right tool if you are writing code and want routing, failover and bring your own key. It is the wrong tool if you want to sit down and use the models: the free plan is capped at 50 requests a day on free models, and every paid request is a per token bill. Krater is the alternative for that second group, a $20 a month workspace with 400+ models, image, video and voice tools on one credit balance, with an OpenAI compatible API from the $49 Ultra plan. Developer gateways such as LiteLLM, Portkey, Vercel AI Gateway and Cloudflare AI Gateway are the alternatives for the first group.

What OpenRouter is and what it costs

OpenRouter sits between your code and dozens of model providers. You call one OpenAI compatible endpoint, pick a model string such as anthropic/claude-sonnet-5, and OpenRouter routes the request to a provider, falls back if that provider is down and bills you from a prepaid credit balance. Its own FAQ says it passes through the pricing of the underlying providers while pooling their uptime, so the per token rate is the same as going direct.

The fee is on the way in, not per request. OpenRouter charges 5.5 percent, with an $0.80 minimum, when you buy credits by card, and 5 percent on crypto payments. The Business tier on the pricing page shows an 8 percent platform fee and Enterprise lists fee discounts. There is no monthly subscription for individuals: you top up, and the balance drains at list price.

  • Free models carry the :free suffix and, in OpenRouter's words, have low rate limits. The daily cap rises once your account has bought credits; the docs render the exact dollar threshold as a variable, so we do not quote a number.
  • Bring your own key lets you attach your own OpenAI, Anthropic or Google key. Requests then bill on your provider account, and OpenRouter only charges its 5 percent fee above the monthly allowance.
  • A negative credit balance produces errors even on free models.

Who should stay on OpenRouter

If any of these describe you, OpenRouter or another gateway is the right category and a chat workspace is not a substitute.

  • You are calling models from code and want one API for all of them, with provider fallback when one goes down.
  • You already hold provider keys and want to route through them with BYOK instead of paying a markup.
  • You need data controls per request: OpenRouter lets you block routing to providers that train on data, and can enforce zero data retention globally, per model group, per guardrail or per request. Where a provider's policy is unclear it assumes the endpoint retains and trains, which is the conservative default you want.
  • You are a business that needs in region routing to EU or US only providers, SSO and SCIM, per key credit limits with automatic resets, observability into Langfuse or Datadog, invoicing, credit lines and a DPA. OpenRouter's enterprise page lists all of these.
  • You want to compare raw model output side by side in a browser. OpenRouter's chat playground at openrouter.ai/chat does that, and it is a decent free way to test a prompt across models before you commit.

Why people look for an alternative

The alternatives searches split into two very different groups. The first is engineers who have outgrown a hosted gateway: they want self hosting, lower per request overhead, semantic caching, RBAC and virtual keys, or they need to keep traffic inside their own compliance boundary. That is the crowd DigitalOcean, Portkey, TrueFoundry and Maxim write for, and their answers are gateways: LiteLLM, Portkey, Vercel AI Gateway, Cloudflare AI Gateway, Kong, Bifrost, Together AI, Replicate.

The second group never wanted an API. They signed up because OpenRouter was the cheapest way to get GPT, Claude and Gemini in one place, then hit the reality: 50 free requests a day, a card top up with a fee, a playground that is built for testing prompts rather than doing work, and no image, video, voice or document tooling around the chat. That group is who this page is for, and the fix is a different product category, not a different gateway.

Krater as the alternative for people who want to use the models

Krater is a workspace, not a gateway. You pay a flat monthly price, get a credit balance, and every answer from any of 400+ models is billed in credits from that balance based on what the model actually used. There is nothing to top up unless you want to, no per request fee, and the models sit inside tools built for getting work done rather than testing prompts.

The honest comparison is below. Where OpenRouter wins we say so.

Developer alternatives to OpenRouter

If you are in the first group, these are the names the developer focused comparisons keep landing on. We have not benchmarked them and we link to the pages that have.

  • LiteLLM: open source proxy you host yourself, OpenAI compatible, with virtual keys and budgets. Named by every developer comparison we read.
  • Portkey (now branded PRISMA AIRS AI Gateway): hosted gateway with guardrails, observability and governance for multi team use.
  • Vercel AI Gateway and Cloudflare AI Gateway: gateways that come with the platform you may already deploy on, with caching and analytics.
  • TrueFoundry, Kong AI Gateway, Bifrost: production gateways aimed at governance, low overhead and enterprise deployment.
  • Together AI and Replicate: hosted inference for open models rather than routers across closed ones.

How to switch from OpenRouter to Krater

  • Pick the plan by how you work. Chat, images and tools only: Pro at $20. You also want an API key: Ultra at $49.
  • Open the model picker and search the model you used on OpenRouter by name. The catalogue covers the same OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI and DeepSeek models plus open models.
  • Use Model Arena (/compare) to run your usual prompt across three models and see the credits each answer costs before you settle on one.
  • If you have an integration, point it at Krater's OpenAI compatible endpoint from the API access page and swap the key. Text, image, video and audio endpoints are documented per model.
  • Leave your OpenRouter balance for anything that genuinely needs routing controls. The two are not exclusive.

Highlights

Where OpenRouter is better

OpenRouter is better if you need BYOK, per request data policy controls, provider level routing or a free API tier. Krater has none of those.

Where Krater is better

Krater is better if you want to actually work with the models: one subscription, creative and document tools next to the chat, mobile apps, and no card top ups with a fee.

Same models, real usage billing

Both give you the same underlying models. Krater bills real usage in credits, so a long answer from a flagship model costs more credits than a short one from a small model, the same way it costs more tokens on OpenRouter.

Frequently asked questions

Is OpenRouter free?

Partly. The free plan gives you 25+ free models from 4 providers with a cap of 50 requests a day and low rate limits. Paid models need prepaid credits, and OpenRouter charges a 5.5 percent fee with an $0.80 minimum when you buy them.

Does OpenRouter mark up model prices?

No. OpenRouter states it passes through the underlying providers' token prices without markup. The cost is the 5.5 percent fee on credit purchases (5 percent for crypto), and a 5 percent fee on bring your own key usage above the monthly allowance.

Is Krater cheaper than OpenRouter?

It depends on how you use the models. Krater is a flat $20, $49 or $119 a month for a credit balance that is billed per answer on real usage, so light users pay a predictable amount and there is no top up fee. A developer sending high volumes of API traffic can pay less on OpenRouter at raw token prices, especially with BYOK. Krater does not offer BYOK.

Can I use Krater as an API like OpenRouter?

Yes, on the Ultra plan ($49 a month) and above. Krater exposes OpenAI compatible endpoints for text, image, video and audio models, documented per model on the API access pages. The Pro plan is chat and tools only.

What is the best OpenRouter alternative for developers?

For code, the alternatives are other gateways: LiteLLM if you want to self host, Portkey or TrueFoundry for hosted governance, Vercel AI Gateway or Cloudflare AI Gateway if you already deploy there. Krater is the alternative if you want to use the models in a workspace rather than route API traffic.
