How to Cancel GitHub Copilot (Individual and Org Seats)
Cancel GitHub Copilot in Billing and licensing settings in two minutes. Individual, trial and org seat steps, plus who gets it free anyway.
Cancel Copilot Individual
- Log in at github.com and open your photo menu, then Settings.
- In the sidebar, open Billing and licensing, then GitHub Copilot.
- Choose Cancel subscription (or downgrade from Pro+ to Pro or Free).
- Confirm. Copilot keeps working until the end of the current billing cycle.
On a free trial?
Same place: Settings, Billing and licensing, GitHub Copilot, Cancel trial. Cancelling during the trial means no charge; the trial converts automatically if you let it lapse.
Copilot Business or Enterprise (org seats)
Individual members cannot cancel an org subscription. An organization owner goes to the org's Settings, then Billing and licensing, then GitHub Copilot, and removes seat assignments or cancels the plan there. Removing yourself from the org stops your access, not the billing.
The gotchas that trip people up
- Uninstalling the IDE extension does not cancel billing. The subscription lives on your GitHub account.
- Cancellation is end-of-cycle, not immediate. You will see "cancels on [date]" in billing; that is normal.
- Students and open-source maintainers get Copilot free. If you qualified, check you were not paying for something GitHub gives you anyway.
Why people actually cancel
- They stopped coding or switched editors. Copilot only earns its keep inside a compatible IDE workflow.
- The free tier is enough. GitHub now offers a free Copilot tier that covers light completion needs.
- A different tool took over. Cursor, Claude Code, or chat-based coding replaced the autocomplete use case.
