Custom GPTs are being retired on 11 December 2026 and creation already ended. Here is what happened to yours and how to get it back.

OpenAI announced on 11 September 2026 that custom GPTs are being retired and replaced with plugins: reusable instructions bundled with connected apps and MCP tools. The milestones that explain what you are seeing:
| What you are seeing | What happened |
|---|---|
| You cannot create a new GPT | Creation ended 25 September 2026 for affected workspaces. This is permanent, not a bug. |
| Your GPT exists but is read-only | It was migrated to a plugin by its creator or your workspace admin. The original stays usable until December but cannot be edited. |
| Your GPT vanished from the sidebar or store | Retirement cleanup or a migration. Check your admin notices. Enterprise workspaces saw the first wave in September. |
| A GPT you use (but did not build) disappeared | Only the creator can migrate a published GPT. If they did not, it stops working on 11 December at the latest. |
| Everything still works fine | You are in the grace period. It ends 11 December 2026. |
The published timeline describes Enterprise workspaces first, and OpenAI says other plans "may follow the same transition timeline," so assume it applies to you regardless of plan.
Depends what state it is in:
Migrate to plugins. For workspace admins there is a migration tool that converts published GPTs to plugins with sharing controls and a workspace directory. For everyone else it is murkier: plugins are a developer primitive (instructions plus connected apps plus optional MCP servers), the migration tooling is admin-facing, and sharing settings, conversations and Custom Actions do not carry over automatically.
In plain terms: if your GPT was a role with instructions (a copy editor, a tutor, a code reviewer), plugins are overkill and there is a simpler destination.
If your GPT was instructions plus a personality, rebuild it as a Krater Persona: paste the same instructions, name it, done. You get the identical workflow plus things GPTs never had: any of 500+ models instead of only OpenAI's, image, video, voice and music inside the same chat, living documents via Keep and connected apps (Notion, Gmail, Slack) instead of frozen uploads, and schedules so it works while you are away. Personas are included on every plan, from Pro at $20/month.

Did OpenAI delete my custom GPT? Not yet; retirement is 11 December 2026. What you are seeing is the transition: creation ended 25 September and migrated GPTs become read-only.
Why can't I create a custom GPT anymore? Creation was switched off on 25 September 2026 for affected workspaces ahead of the December retirement.
Will my GPT come back as a plugin automatically? No. Migration is manual and admin-driven for published workspace GPTs. Personal accounts may get no migration path at all.
My GPT is read-only. Can I still copy the instructions? Yes. Open it and copy the configuration text before it disappears entirely.
What replaces custom GPTs on free plans? OpenAI says plugins are the replacement for all plans, but nothing says personal accounts get the migration tooling. A Persona or a saved prompt workflow is the practical equivalent.
Is this affecting the GPT Store? Public GPTs created in affected workspaces are included in the transition. Access to a public GPT does not guarantee access to any replacement plugin.
