How to Connect GitHub to Claude, ChatGPT or Any AI Agent

How to Connect GitHub to Claude, ChatGPT or Any AI Agent

Every way to connect GitHub to an AI: Claude's connector, ChatGPT's app, GitHub's official MCP server, and the zero-setup option.

How to Connect GitHub to Claude, ChatGPT or Any AI Agent

Option 1: Claude's GitHub connector

  1. Claude → Customize → Connectors → GitHub.
  2. Authorize and pick which repos it can see.
  3. On Team/Enterprise, admins may install the Claude GitHub App for org-wide access.

Option 2: ChatGPT's GitHub app

  1. ChatGPT → Settings → Apps → GitHub, then authorize.
  2. Once connected, ChatGPT can search repos, read code and answer questions about your codebase; event-triggered tasks can react to pull request activity.

Option 3: GitHub's official MCP server

GitHub maintains an official MCP server. Two flavors:

# Hosted remote server (recommended, OAuth flow)
claude mcp add --transport http github https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/

# Local container version
claude mcp add github -- npx -y @github/github-mcp-server

The hosted version handles auth for you; the local one needs a personal access token in the environment.

What connecting GitHub unlocks

The zero-setup version: Krater

Krater's agent has GitHub built in, plus Slack, Linear, Notion, Gmail and 30+ other apps, all connected once and usable by every model (Claude, GPT, Gemini, 500+ total). Ask it to triage issues in one message and it knows what to do. See the GitHub integration.

Privacy note

Scope the connection to the repos you actually want the AI to see; read access is the sane default. Private repo contents should never be sent to a model you wouldn't email them to.
