Free ChatGPT includes limited image creation, but picking GPT Image 2 by name costs money. How the limits work and what each image really costs.

| Where | Free? | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT, free account | Yes, limited | Image creation with a separate, unpublished limit; model version chosen by OpenAI |
| ChatGPT Plus and above | Paid | Higher image limits |
| OpenAI API | Paid | Token billing, you choose gpt-image-2, quality and size |
| Krater | Paid | GPT Image 2 by name, from 3 credits per image |
OpenAI's ChatGPT Free Tier FAQ lists "Create images in ChatGPT" as a free capability, and says image generation has its own usage limit, separate from chat. OpenAI does not publish a fixed number. When you hit it, ChatGPT tells you and shows when it resets.
The API bills GPT Image 2 by tokens, with image output at $30 per million tokens on OpenAI's pricing. Because higher quality and bigger sizes use more tokens, the per-image cost swings a lot: roughly half a cent at Low quality up to about 21 cents at High quality for a 1024x1024 image. Great for developers, overkill if you just want pictures.
Krater has no free tier, but you choose GPT Image 2 by name, set the quality yourself, and see the price before you generate. These are Krater's live credit prices:
| Size | Low | Medium | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1024x768 (4:3) | 3 | 10 | 37 |
| 1024x1024 (square) | 3 | 14 | 53 |
| 1024x1536 (portrait) | 3 | 11 | 42 |
| 1920x1080 (16:9) | 3 | 10 | 40 |
On Krater Pro ($20/month, 1,500 credits) that is about 40 High-quality 4:3 images, 150 at Medium, or 500 at Low, and the same credits also cover chat with 400+ AI models, video and voice. Plus is $9/month with 500 credits. Details on Krater pricing.

Free ChatGPT accounts can create images, within a separate image limit that OpenAI does not publish as a fixed number. ChatGPT does not let you pick the exact image model version.
